Introduction

Historical background of the Department of Social Welfare

Chinese Culture University was founded by Dr. Chang Chi-Yun in 1962 at Hwa Kang campus on Yang Min Shan in Taipei City.

In 1972, to enhance the education of humanities and the adolescent and child welfare, the program of child welfare was set up in the department of Home Economics.

In 1973, a new and independent department of Child Welfare was constructed and was expended again in 1974 as the department of Child and Adolescent Welfare.

In 1975 the department of Adolescent and Child Welfare was officially established.

For decades, the department of Adolescent and Child Welfare Chinese Culture University became the pioneer and leading force of child welfare research and education institute.

In 1998, the department of Social Welfare the renamed to respond the increasing complexity of social change the variety of social issues. The research and education of the department nowadays include renowned  child welfare, it also covers the current social issues and diversified population including family support and protection, elderly, disability, substance abuse, new immigrant and more newly social issues widely.

 

Characters of the department of social welfare

      The department emphasizes the value of humanities and importance of social safety net in a global society. It focuses on the macro study of social policy and social design. It also values the impact of social administration and influence of providing social service to the people in need.

      The department provides the education and professional training for students to combine the knowledge from sociology, social work, social security and social welfare economy to become a professional social welfare practitioner and skilled social service provider.

      It also encourages the international study and learning from doing filed education oversea under the supervision of Taiwan’s international social organization. The international learning experience provides the students to broaden the learning horizon and upgrade the scope of global views.

 

Goals of the department of Social Welfare

The department continues to expand the cooperation with the international social welfare community, provides students to conduct the field education requirement abroad. The curriculum design keeps up with the fast paced social change and integrates the multi social science academic disciplines including sociology, psychology, demography, quantitative data analysis into the course curriculum . More issues on cultural diversity, gender study and contemporary social issues will be covered in future course design.

      For the future, the department will follow the ongoing activities with international and local professional community to improve the research quality, to enhance the skill of welfare workers, and contribute to the future development and fulfillment of welfare society blueprint in Taiwan.
